Get Fit!

Exercise and a healthy diet are the best ways to prevent heart disease.  Can you find a way to incorporate cardiovascular exercise into your schedule?  Can you actually follow the Play 60 recommendations?  For this challenge, you have to be active for 60 minutes a day for a minimum of three days.  You need to do something out of the ordinary - try a fitness class,  go for a run, walk the dog...anything that you are not use to doing.  It is helpful to take this challenge with a group of friends or family.  Discuss what you did and write a brief reflection on the experience.  Explain why exercise is important for cardiovascular health.

  1. I began this challenge on Sunday, January 27. The first activity I did was go to the park for a run/walk. I spend about an hour switching between an easy run and fast walk. Although I was tired at the end, it felt refreshing afterwards, and I could tell my muscles and heart were feeling stronger.
On the second day (Monday) I went to the YMCA to do the elliptical for an hour. Again, it was fairly painful after an hour, but I could tell my body felt more healthy. My heart rate also increased during the workout, but I found it much easier to lower it the at the end because I had done exercise the day before.
On the third day, I went for another walk around my block. I also jogged a little bit. This time, it simply felt refreshing to be active. I not only cleared my mind, but I felt at ease-muscles relaxed. I think I will continue to do simple activities like this to stay more fit.
I want to have good habits now so that when I get older I don't have to face too many health issues. Especially with a family history of heart disease and various heart related issues, it is important for me to stay active.

  2. For as much time as there is in a day and how insignificant ONE hour feels like, I found this challenge actually quite difficult setting aside an hour aware of strictly exercising. For one hour I went to a class called Pure Barre, it is a one hour class focusing on resistance and restraint with your own body weight. As easy as that sounds, it was extremely hard. The class incorporated 1-3 inch movements against your own body. I have never been so sore waking up the next morning... Having always played an athletic sport, I was used to hard core training and high cardio workouts. This class was totally opposite for me, focusing on controlling your movements through your core. I did it for three days and although it never got easier I found that I had more control over my body. I also felt better throughout the day, my motivation would increase instantly. Exercise is highly important for one’s health due to the fact that our bodies were made to move. We are living creatures that require certain levels of everything. It’s like the saying “use it or lose it”. If we aren’t aware of using our bodies then they will start shutting down. Overall this was a small challenge that can make a big difference. It just goes to show you that you don’t have to be an olympic athlete or train like one to look and feel good.

  3. For this challenge I decided I would go to an hour long work out class at the YMCA each day of the week.I got my membership about a year go and I always just gone up there and did the elliptical and some weight machines here and there. But for this challenge I was determined to do something different. The first day (Monday) I went to a 6:00 cycle class. I was the only teenager in there, so I felt a little out of place, but once the class got started I got more into it and I didn't feel like the only teenager in the class. That was probably the longest hour of my life, and my butt was already sore, I could only imagine what the next day was going to feel like. After the redness of my face and the panting of my breath reduced I felt so much better about my self. I also found out I was more out of shape than I thought. The next day I went to the 7:00 Zumba class. There were all ages in there and both male and female. This was my first Zumba class ever, and I got to say I probably laughed more than anything, but it was a good workout and I felt the burn...who knew moving like that would wear you out so much. The third day I went to a class called Muscle Flex. The instructor looked a bit intimidating and I almost walked out but I stayed with it and completed the work out. This class probably made me the most sore thus far. My arms and legs felt like noodles, I didn't think I was going to be able to drive home. On Thursday I went to a class called Flexible Strength. I did not know what to expect going into this class, but it ended up being a class mixed with Ballet and Yoga. It brought back some child hood memories back in my dance years. It was really relaxing to say the least. On Friday I took a day off because it was Friday. But I ended my week Saturday morning when I woke up to go to an early Cycle class. This was a different teacher other than Monday, so I wasn't expecting the same work out. This class was a lot harder than Monday that is for sure, but it was a great work out and got my blood pumping. After this week of workout classes I felt so much better about myself, and I also found it was a good stress reliever to go work out. Every day after I would work out for an hour I would feel like I actually accomplished something. It was not easy giving up that hour of my day to work out but I am so glad I did it because I learned I am capable of doing whatever I want to do if I set my mind to it, and plus I feel a lot healthier about myself. Exercise is important for cardiovascular health because it burns fat and gets your blood pumping. If you do not exercise than fat can build up around your heart and cause many problems to your health.

  4. Since I have always been involved in many sports, I thought this challenge would be very easy, but I learned quickly that I was wrong. It was difficult to make time for different ways of working out other than just running on the track like I do each day. I got my mom to join me so that we could both hold each other accountable and actually do the workouts. We decided to do Yoga at the Recreation Center in Coppell a couple of weeks ago on Monday and Wednesday. On Tuesday, we took my dog for a long walk around the parks at Andy Brown. I hope to continue working out in different ways and getting my friends and family to join me! Exercising is important for cardiovascular health because it boosts your energy level and puts you in a good mood. It also decreases you chances of developing depression, having a stroke, or developing cancer.

  6. Since I haven't worked out in awhile, I thought that this challenge would be very beneficial to my body and my health. I worked out on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday. On Sunday, I walked to the gym and attempted to run a mile, but was very out of breath within the first few minutes. So I moved to elliptical for the rest of the hour. Previously, when I was working out, I used to do the machine for an hour with no problems, but this time is was very difficult to complete. The next day, I came back and did elliptical for 30 minutes and jogged/walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes. I could already feel my workout becoming easier. On Wednesday, I attended a Spin Class which was SO hard. It was an hour long, and I was aching all over. It was so difficult! Exercise is important for cardiovascular health because it can help combat diseases and heart problems, assist with energy, promotes better sleep, and can be an overall fun activity to do instead of sitting around like a couch potato. Exercise is good for the body and can help tone/lose weight for your body, so I really try to do it more often (at least 3 days a week). Especially since Spring Break is coming up! :)

  7. This challenge was a lot harder than it sounded. The hardest part was finding the time throughout the week to find one hour that I need to dedicate to exercise. I had just gotten a new pair of roller blades ( for my street hockey adventures ) and so I dedicated an hour two of the days to roller blading. It was fun, but also tiring and made my feet hurt. The last day I spent an hour doing a run/jog, I can't say that I didn't walk a little bit too :). Fitness is important for cardiac health because it works the heart muscle by increasing your heart rate, and it just overall important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is important to work out in order to keep your body working probably, prevent diseases, and burn excess fat that could possibly cause health problems. I'm overall glad that I did this challenge, it was hard but worth it and it challenged me, so that's always fun!

  8. This exercise challenge coincided nicely with what I decided to do for lent. I split up lent into four parts, one of the parts is to work out everyday for 10 days straight. I started this on Saturday, February 23 and will continue it until Monday, March 4th. I have played soccer in the past three days, each for more than an hour. I am on an indoor soccer team and an outdoor soccer team. Whenever I play in the games, it is an amazing workout and I am always really tired afterwards. I plan to continue working out everyday (for the 10 days) by doing yoga, going running and riding my bike. I have five tests this week and working out is a great stress reliever for me. I always feel really relaxed afterwards (endorphins!!!). Working out and just simply leading an active lifestyle is extremely important for cardiovascular health. First of all, it helps to prevent obesity, which can cause heart attacks. Second, working out releases natural endorphins which improves mood and energy. Overall, it was a great challenge and wasn't incredibly difficult to complete.

  9. I began my challenge on February 17th and I religiously participated in it until February 24th. For my exercise challenge, I decided to start fast walking ever day once I get home from school. I usually get home around 5:30 so I would stretch for 15 minutes, walk for 40 minutes and cool down for 5 minutes. At first, I felt like I was wasting my time because, although I was increasing my heart rate, I was only going half of the distance I usually went when I would go jogging. But, by the end of the week, I was able to use my walk as a time to reflect over my day and plan out what I still needed to accomplish. Exercise is important for your cardiovascular health because it strengthens your heart and lungs, improves your blood circulation, and creates endorphins, making you a happier person. I would like to continue walking, but I definitely don’t have to do it every single day. If I could create a new plan, I would try to walk 4 days a week for 35 minutes. This would keep me active and would allow me time to plan around other activates.

  10. I began doing this challenge a few weeks back when I enrolled in a flag football league and ultimate Frisbee league. I saw this as a an opportunity to get out for at least an hour a day and do something active. I told my friends for football that since we were playing people at a much higher level than us(varsity players) that we should try to at least practice an hour a day. At firs this was difficult due to everyone's schedules but eventually we were able to agree on at least 3 days a week. Similarly with Frisbee, we were able to practice everyday since everyone on our team were seniors. Today, its been about two weeks since I started incorporating these one to two hour activities in my life.I feel better than ever. This is important to my cardiovascular health because it ensures that I am exercising and working out my heart in order to keep it healthy. Furthermore, it is vital to make sure that your heart is healthy otherwise your not healthy. I feel that these new practices have helped me run more and be more active throughout the school week rather than just going to school and coming home.

  11. Exercising is an important aspect of a healthy lifestyle and the 60 minute get fit challenge is a great way to do this. I started doing this a few weeks ago, starting with free running, sprinting and ultimate frisbee. By no, I have been doing this mix aerobic workout for nearly 3 weeks. This is very important to my health as it helps me exercise and ensures that keeping my heart and cardiovascular health good. Most importantly however, is that it helps me get into the habit of a heatlhy workout

  12. I began this fitness challenge on Wednesday, February 20th, two days after I got my membership to the YMCA. Everyday for the next five days that followed I devoted an hour and a half to running and working out. The days after that were pretty brutal, but I could tell a small difference in my overall health. I would go to the gym everyday and workout for an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes and then run for about fifteen to thirty minutes. It was very tiring and challenging, but it will all be worth it in the end. I am making it a part of my everyday routine from now on, and will keep doing it as long as I am able. Running and working out are very good for heart health because they help lower blood pressure, which reduced strain on the heart, helps you lose weight, builds muscle mass, and most importantly it it improves circulation which prevents blood clots that can cause a heart attack or a stroke.

  13. I work out one hour a day 5 to 7 days every week. The way it makes your body feels in awesome. When you work out, your body releases endorphins which can make you feel better and improve your mood. It is important to try new things and not get used to a particular work out routine. I love doing zumba class two days a week. It is an excellent cardiovascular work out and not to mention fun! When you make a habit of working out, and even lose excess fat, your blood pressure can be lowered and you will have so much more energy

  14. I found this get fit challenge to actually be a simple way to incorporate fun ways to work out into an average day. On the first day of my get fit challenge, I hopped onto my long board for the first time in a few months and called up a couple friends. We drove to a series of neighborhoods in Flower Mound with big hills and spent around two hours riding around. The rush of the speed got my heart going and of course, once we got down to the bottom of the hill, if we wanted to go down again, we had to walk back up to the top which took a lot more time than going down. On the second day I gathered another group of buddies and we went to Andy Brown and played sand volleyball for an hour or so, after that we went and long boarded some more. It was a great day and a fun way to get my heart going. On the final day, I just went for a walk. I walked for a little over an hour and probably walked near four miles total. The walk was simple and a great way to clear my mind and get some exercise in at the same time. Whether I was being really active on my long board or just taking a simple walk, I effectively burned fat and calories and had a good time while doing so. This is something that I definitely want to continue doing.

  15. I have never been athletic or participated in a sport, so I decided to run. I used the app RunKeeper to keep track of my progress. On the first day, I did great. I ran to Wagon Wheel Park, ran there, and ran back. I was even sore the next day. On the second day, I slacked off. It wasn't that I had a big difficulty doing so, but I got too lazy. On the third day, I vowed to do better. I was going to dedicate a whole two hours instead of one, but I pulled a muscle. I realized that for someone who isn't used to being active, you can't just jump in and expect the best. It must be graduate and you must be very careful. Although I ended up hurting myself, I don't regret those three short days. I felt accomplished and it was the first time I have ever gotten myself out there. I realize now after our heart studies how important endurance is. It makes your body stronger and distresses the ability to pump blood through the body.

  16. Fortunately I have been exercising regularly these few months so making time for working out was not difficult for me. The first day I went to the gym and did cardio for 30 minutes and then worked on squats and my legs. The next day I went to the gym and did a zumba class. It was the most tiring work out but it was fun! The last day I went to a cycling class and I have never been so sore in my life. Exercise is necessary to be healthy and to even lower your blood pressure. It is also necessary to just be happy with yourself!

  18. Before attempting this challenge, I felt like I wasn't going to enjoy exercising at all. However, it's actually been much more relaxing and fun than I thought. For the last five days or so, I have been riding a bicycle around my neighborhood for at least one hour a day. It was much a much better experience from running because there was no impact on my feet and I could rest if I wanted to. Right after working out, I felt great, but even hours later I felt much less stressed about school than usual. Exercise like this is great for keeping up a healthy lifestyle and preventing heart issues.

  19. luckily for me I've been exercising for the past 3 years. AT least 5 days a week on random days i do one to two cardiovascular workouts and 3 to 4 weight training work outs. each of my work out consist of 1 hour to 1 30 min. I love to train and to push my body to new limits. working out makes me feel good and to help me stay healthy . If i miss a work of just being lazy then i feel FAT. working out should be a benefit every one should do to maintain a healthy life style.

  20. Putting aside an extra hour each day is actually more difficult than it may seem. I have more motivation knowing that it is only 4% of my day. I have always been involved in demanding sports and ever since I've played only golf, I know how important it is to do cardio and weights outside of golf practice. This challenge has encouraged me to work on my endurance and stamina. While golf is not a physical sport, I think being more fit gives me an advantage over girls who don't work out. I feel like I have more energy and I feel like I have accomplished something. A new thing that I have tried is cycling. A one hour cycling class is good because you are continuously doing something for an entire hour. After the class I feel stronger and more energized.

  21. I found that if i go for a run after coming home from school, I feel a lot less tired that when i don't. Having senior release, I found that time right after school to be a convenient time to do my hour of exercise. Although my friends and I have exercised together before this challenge, it was different because we incorporated running. I think cardio helps your cardiovascular system because it keeps the heart going and helps keep you energized.

  22. Starting this challenge was much more difficult than I thought it would be. Finding the time to set aside for exercise for three days is extremely difficult when I have multiple AP classes and other extra curricular activities I have on a daily basis. When I was able to squeeze in the time I walked/jogged a couple of miles on all of the days. When I had finished the exercises I felt much better about myself. I was also in a better mood and had more energy. Finding the time to fit in this challenge was the hardest part. My family's history with heart disease is a long list, having had several relatives die from heart failure. My grandfather walks a little over four miles every morning because he has lost five siblings to a heart related condition. He eventually had a heart attack nearly two years ago and his cardiologist told him that the only reason he survived was because his heart was so strong from the exercise. Exercise strengthens heart muscles and helps prevents non-hereditary conditions from occurring.

  23. I do exercise on a daily basis but when I did this challenge it was very difficult to do this challenge. I think this is so hard because my body is not used to doing this type of exercise so it was very difficult for me to do. I do a lot of different types of exercise but I found that I haven't done cycling at all and when I took this challenge it was very difficult to preform this task. I think that it is good to vary up your exercise instead of just running or just swimming because then your body only works certain areas in your body and you do not get to work certain muscles. So thats why varying up your exercise is good in that reason and so you don't get bored with just doing one or two things every time you workout. Exercise is important for cardio health because it helps make your heart stronger and your bones and muscles. Exercising daily will increase your amount of time to live. I think this was a good challenge for me and I will definately start varying up my exercise as well as my fun activites i do outside of exercise.

  24. I usually do exercise a few times a week at L.A fitness so I decided to try this challenge for 3 days (I would have done longer than 3 days straight, but it's complicated to do that with my job.) I started Tuesday by doing 30 minutes on the elliptical trainer and 15 minutes on the treadmill a long with 20 minutes on different weight machines afterwards. The first day was not that bad because that is stuff I usually do except for a shorter amount of time. The second day I repeated this and it was harder to do. I usually give myself a day break in between the days I workout so working two days back to back was different. On the third day I decided to try something different and do the Body Works Plus Abs class. That was probably the hardest workout I have done. It was an hour long and had you doing these strange workouts with weights and there was not a second in that hour where you can stop moving and rest. I enjoyed it a lot and every where on my body was so sore that it was really hard for me to get up and walk around the next day. Exercise is good for the cardiovascular system because it helps make your blood pressure a healthy rate by lowering it. It makes the heart stronger and keeps fat off the heart so there is no problem for it to pump. This was a very fun challenge and it helped me find new things to do when working out so I don't have to do the same thing every time.

  25. The "Get Fit" challenge, is definitely harder than it seems. Exercise has always been a big part of my life as I have always been involved in sports such as volleyball, beach volleyball, tennis, and more. Although, my senior year I have not been as active as I would like to have been. A couple of weeks ago, I exercised for 3 days in a row for at least 60 minutes each. I walked my dog (which is incredibly hard as my dog weighs 95 pounds, so she really walked me). I attended the gym to work on solely cardio, I ran on the elliptical for 60 minutes on a steep incline, and on the third day I attended a Bikram Yoga class. I've found that overall I am a happier person when I exercise, and I get a better nights sleep after being active that day. Exercise is really great as it gets one's heart rate going and different exercises serve different purposes. The bikram yoga I did was completely isometric and easily the hardest workout I have ever done sitting in a 105 degree room for 90 minutes. Although, the running I did at the gym and walking my dog was isotonic because I was constantly moving around. Exercising does great things for the heart, it keeps blood vessels flexible and open, reduces risk for heart disease, and reducing inflammation in the heart. Overall, I plan on working out more often and keeping in better shape.

  26. I work out at least three times a week but with wok and school, it’s sometimes very hard to find an hour for fitness and exercise. Monday through Wednesday, I went to the gym for over an hour to work on my cardio and strength. I do cardio a lot but I need to build muscles and strength. I started to relate working out to relaxation and use it as a way to feel energetic. After my workouts, I started to feel better, less tired and just happy. I realized even on busy days, you can find at least 30 minutes to workout and stay active. It’s just getting the motivation to do it. Working out boosts my energy and just make me feel better about myself. It puts me in a good mood, and helps me maintain my weight and keep my body toned.

  27. The heart needs just as much attention than the rest of our body does. Knowing this I began the challenge by taking a jog around a trail walk that is conveniently located near my apartment complex. I would spend approximately a hour and a half from 5 to 6:30 jogging (until I give in and begin to take a walk as a break then start back up again). When I was done with my jog I began to feel like my heart would start to break out of my rib cage and walk off, but when I would sit down to do my homework I felt as if a huge burden of some sort has been lifted off my shoulders. The heart pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body so if we do not keep the heart healthy then it will not be good.

  28. For the past 4 years I've been really working out a lot due to extracurricular sports. But I currently enrolled myself into an MMA class. The workouts are more intense than anything I've ever done and I really like it because it challenges me to do thing I never knew I could do. Simple things as walking up the stairs at the school, isn’t that hard anymore and I’m not gasping for air when I reach the top. It has impacted my dance life a lot because I’m able to do things faster and more graceful than I was doing them before. Yes, before I was fit, but I wasn’t as fit as I am now. I really like this new workout routine and lifestyle and I plan to continue it although it is time consuming. Exercise is important for the cardiovascular health because your heart needs to be healthy for it to function and continue it daily routine.

  29. I began running at Texas Family Fitness everyday, on top of my weight workouts. And now i'm hooked on fitness! I began by running a mile a day. That quickly escalated to one and a half. And then two. Now three. Not only is running a great warm-up for weight-lifting, but it also keeps my heart in good health. Cardio activities improve the body's ability to use oxygen. Over a period of time, your heart rate and blood pressure begin to drop to a safe, healthy rate. As a result, circulation in the body is improved as well as an improved energy level. I love fitness!

  30. I am already accustomed to working out on a daily basis due to lacrosse practice. However, it is rare that I get the chance to go to the gym for 60 minutes 3 days in a row. On top of that, I rarely ever incorporate weights into my workouts. Therefore, for the past 3 days, I have made a conscious effort to do more strength and ab exercises by using hand weights and doing core exercises before school each morning. It's amazing how a 30 minute circuit training workout like that can wake me up and put me in a better mood for the rest of the day. After practice, I have tried to run several miles on a treadmill as well in order to keep up my endurance. However, that's certainly not the only benefit! Exercise is proven to lower blood pressure, increase weight loss(which helps the heart to pump easier), and increase energy levels. I feel very accomplished for my progress and intend to continue to work out on a daily basis, not including lacrosse practice. A healthy heart is worth an hour of exercise each day!!

  31. By playing hockey and having practice everyday, I am already used to working out on a regular basis. We usually practice on the ice and then work out afterwards, both with weights and running. If i ever have a day off of practice, I try and go to the gym to get an extra workout in. This week, I had practice and workout 3 days in a row. Getting to workout after practice makes you feel stronger and have more energy. Working out kind of puts the top on a good day of exercise and having 3 days in a row of it made me have more energy and feel more alive. Working out is a great way to stay in shape and it will help you in many ways. It will keep your fat level down, keeping fat away from your heart so that it can function properly. It can also lower your blood pressure. Having the challenge of working out for 60 minutes a day was one that kind of happened on its own due to my athletic schedule and will probably continue to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Recently a friend and I started training for a half-marathon. We set up a ten week schedule and began running every day. I ran three days consecutively up to 3 miles and this next week I am increasing my mileage. I have not been in the habit of running since this past October so naturally the first mile was the hardest. However I noticed a huge difference as the days progressed in my stamina. I was able to run at a quicker pace for longer periods of time. The satisfaction of being able to meet my workout goal for the day was great! Exercise is important because keeping your body active is a good way to relieve stress and release endorphins in your body to boost your mood. By doing Cardio workouts, it strengthens the heart and gets more oxygen pumping throughout the body. Also by staying active for at least an hour a day it can begin to reduce the adipose fat surrounding the heart and lessen a person’s likelihood to develop a heart disease.

  33. On an average day, I try to do some sort of cardio workout such as the elliptical or treadmill for about 45 minutes. For this challenge I decided to switch it up. I started this Sunday. Since it was beautiful outside, I took my dog for a run/walk around the duck pond at Andy Brown/Kid Kountry. I made sure that when I was walking, I kept a fast pace so that my heart rate stayed up! Monday, I decided to try a Zumba class for the first time. I figured it wouldn't be too hard since its all about dance and I have experience doing similar moves. However it kicked my butt and was a great workout!! I definitely plan on going back! Tuesday was my favorite though. I attempted hot yoga! Hot Yoga is designed to help lean and tone your body, help you lose weight, and relax you! The room is set to 105 degrees. You sweat more than you think you can but its such a good feeling! I plan on making it a regular thing maybe 3 times a week! Exercise is important for your cardiovascular health because it strengthens your heart and lungs, improves your blood circulation, and creates endorphins, improves your overall health and mood! Its an essential part of your lifestyle!

  34. I usually workout everyday, but this last week I decided to switch it up from my normal routine. Im usually working out for about 1-2 hours a day, but this time I did more high intensity oriented exercises. For the first day, I took a one hour nike fitness class. This was way different than my usual routine, a lot harder as the exercises involved much more movement and energy and it was non stop with very short breaks. It was fast paced and different than my original pace. The next day, instead of my normal stair master or treadmill, I went to the basketball court and did suicides and more plyometric exercises that involved various jumping exercises. And for my third day, I did my normal work out at the gym, but after my work out, I decided to jog home instead of taking the car. So I jogged to the gym and jogged back home. Already tired from my normal workout, adding the jog home got me even more tired. Those three days were definitely different and a lot tougher. They were long workouts with a faster pace and more activities. This experience was actually very mind opening as it pushed me to my limits that I have not experienced before. After all the workouts, my shirt was drenched in sweat and I was bent over my knees trying to get breath. Cardiovascular exercise is important as it burns calories and helps you lose weight. Also it will help you burn fat, reduce the risk of heart problems, and prevent high blood pressure. It will change your life and help you live a healthier lifestyle.

  35. I work out when I can but with school and my job I find it very difficult to find the time to do it. This past week I really challenged myself though to work out each morning with strength training and cardio. I did 3 days of cardio for an hour and 2 days of strenght workouts. I felt a lot better after working out and even though it meant I couldn't sleep in as late it still felt good to be active. After doing this challenge I'm going to continue to try to workout atleast 4 times a week.

  36. For this get fit challenge I went out of my comfort zone and tried exercise through dance. I started by doing a Just Dance exercise routine 2 days for an hour. I rarely ever exercise so doing this alone for a straight hour, keep up to the fast paced music, was kind of difficult at first. Then on the third day I took a Zumba class. I felt really out of my comfort zone, but I have to admit it was a good workout and kind of fun. Because I’m not used to that much vigorous exercise daily, it was slightly difficult at first, but then I soon got the hang of it. I also felt much better and had my mood improve a bit. Exercise is important for cardiovascular health because it lowers your chance of heart disease and improves blood circulation. It also helps strengthen your heart and manages cholesterol.

  37. I use to walk every night for an hour with my mom, but with training I haven't had much time. But recently we picked back up on it, and it's very relaxing and refreshing. It gets my heart pumping, and I can feel it working. I feel like if I continue doing this, my muscles will get toned. Not only does it benefit me, but it also benefits my mom who is older, and doesn't get much time to workout because of our business.

  38. For this I began running on my own time. With always having soccer, I never really worked out on my own because I always had soccer. But I felt it would be helpful to start running on my own. It wasn't difficult to get into it because I was already in shape, but it was challenging to push myself to run further and faster than I knew I could which was beneficial. Daily exercise is important because it helps strengthen your heart and cardiovascular system which helps lower your chances of heart disease and heart attacks and helps improve blood circulation.

  39. For three days I walked my dog on my ripstick for about 2 hours. Normally he pulls me but he is out of shape right now so I had to be the one pulling him. It was awesome because I'm normally too lazy to walk him but he had a great time! My feet did get really tired though but I plan to keep on walking him in this way. Cardiovascular exercise is important because it lowers your blood pressure and maintains. It also decreases the chance of heart problems such as heart disease and heart attacks. It will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  40. For 3 days I tried different exercise classes at the YMCA. It was awesome but I was really sore after. I did a spin class and I usually do a zumba class but I did zumba toning instead and that was a lot harder. I then did a boot camp class that totally kicked my butt. I honestly felt a lot better after those 3 days. Cardiovascular exercise is important because the more fat you have the harder it is for your heart to pump blood through your body. When you exercise you burn off fat so it goes hand in hand.

  41. I started the Get Fit challenge on February 19th. I am a lacrosse player so I naturally get my 2 hours of practice 5 days a week and I also lift weights on my own 3 to 4 days a week. However, for this challenge I decided to try something new and instead of lifting weights that week I played basketball at the Rec. I usually played with about 8-10 guys and it was a lot of fun considering I haven't played basketball consistently in about a year. We generally played in 1-2 hours sessions which consisted of multiple games since no one wanted to leave with a losing record. I actually ended up losing about 2 pounds in those few days due to the constant running involved with the basketball games combined with my lacrosse conditioning. I completed the challenge on the 25th of February. It was a lot of fun and it helped me get in better shape for more endurance. Exercise is important for cardiovascular health because it allows your body to perform at optimum potential and helps aid in daily situations.

  42. For the Get Fit challenge, I wanted to focus on running because it's such a simple way to get exercise and I can do it during any time of the day, whether that be late at night or early in the morning. I decided to vary the time and pacing of my running. The first day I decided to go on an hour long run right when I got home from school so I wouldn't put it off until later that evening. This helped me to become awake and energized after a long day at school, which made it much easier for me to do my homework after I was through. The second day I did a similar workout to the first day but made sure to increase the pace of my running. I could definitely tell a difference in my level of tiredness on this day because my body had to adapt to a faster speed. On the last day, which was a Saturday, I decided to go running in the morning instead of the afternoon. I'm used to waking up early for school during the week so it was pretty easy to get myself out of bed. I went running for an hour to an hour and a half and I felt great afterwards. Plus since I was already up early, I got a lot more done that day. Exercise like this is important to cardiovascular health because it helps to rid the body of fats that could build up on the heart and potentially cause a variety of heart disease. It also increases stamina, the release of endorphins, and improves the body's blood circulation.

  43. For the Get Fit Challenge my mom and I tried running for 3 days for 60 minutes. It was pretty easy for my mom because she used to run marathons all the time, but for me it was a little difficult. Even thought I work out everyday in cheer it is still pretty hard to run for 60 minutes, I'll admit I did stop and walk a couple times. I do cardio on a regular bases but I only do like 30 min of cardio and then work on strength. It was hard but doing it with my mom really helped and we agreed that we are both going to try and do cardio for 60 min at least 5 times a week but we both felt really good after working out. Cardio is good for the heart because it burns fat and if you have a lot of fat it can clog your arteries and can result in a heart attack. It is important to do cardio whether it be walking, biking, or running for 60 minutes, anything is better than nothing for your heart.

  44. For the fit challenge i ran in a track group for an hour an a half. Running with the track required me to start drinking a lot of water and stretch. After the warm ups i was already dead tired and was ready to go home. The workouts consisted of very short distances on Thursday, short distance on Friday, and long distance on Saturday. It was tough but i enjoyed the feeling of working to get in shape, so i decided to continue. Exercise is good for you health because it strengthens your heart as well as the cardiovascular system itself. It also helps your body use oxygen better.

  45. One hour feels to be so short to me. As a baseball player I can easily hit the one hour excerise plan. With practice usually lasting for 3 hours. The tough thing about that is I must be able to sustain a high calorie diet so that I will have enough energy to complete the day. So a big breakfast is in order, and as many times as I possibly can a good healthy lunch at school. At home it is easier to get the healthy meals with my mom tooking dinner. Another tough thing with baseball is being able to excerise not in baseball. Finding time to do more traditional workouts is something I am still searching for. But baseball keeps me active and healthy and I love playing the game. Baseball is a great way to excerise while doing something I truly love.

  46. With soccer, I work out regularly during the week, but I decided to do the Get Fit Challenge to see how an hour of walking (with my dog) would affect me. For the first day, I walked my dog around nearby neighborhoods. The second day, I walked my dog to the Duck Pond and the neighborhoods over there, and on the last day I walked my dog to CMSE and back to my house. I found that the actual walking part of the experience wasn’t difficult; rather it was making time for the walks that was hard. However, once I fit the walk into my schedule and started walking I just felt better because I was relaxed and wasn’t stressed out over anything. I could tell that my dog got something out of the walks too because she enjoyed seeing new things and wasn’t so restless at night. Overall, it was a good experience because the exercise made me feel better and I could tell that my dog was happy about the exercise as well. Ultimately, exercise is crucial to cardiovascular health because it can help lower the “bad” cholesterol in your body, while increasing the “good” cholesterol. Exercise also lowers stress levels, high blood pressure, and over the long run can help prevent heart disease and strokes.

  47. As an active athlete, I exercise on a daily basis. I spend at least four hours every day doing some kind of exercise, whether it be cardio or weight training or sport-specific activities. So, for this challenge (since I already met the 60 minute requirement), I added in a type of exercise I have never tried. I attended yoga classes multiple times over the past week, and have already begun to feel a difference. My body feels more relaxed throughout the day, and I do not experience as much pain when I stand up or move around. I also feel more relaxed. I think that the combination of strenuous exercise (like running or lifting weights) with relaxing and rebuilding exercise (like yoga) is a vital component in a healthy lifestyle. Not only does it maintain weight and a healthy heart, but it also improves one's morale and outlook on life.

  48. Exercise is extremely important for our bodies and plays a vital role in improving cardiovascular health because exercising is what our body does to strengthen our heart which could potentially increase the length of our lives. The heart is the most important muscle in the body and by doing exercises to keep it healthy, we can avoide numerous health problems. For this reason, I've decided to play basketball for at least an hour for 4 days out of the week. This is easily achievable to me because I have a lot of free time and playing basketball is one of my favorite things to do. After a week of this, my legs have stopped getting sore as a sign that my body is getting used to this type of exercise which is a good thing. Not only does exercising improve one's cardio health, it also improves ones physical body image, which is another great reason and motivation to exercise!

  49. Mrs. Martins and I ran a 4K (yes, a 4K, not a 5K!! ha!) early March. Although we weren't 1st place winners and didn't run the whole time, it was a great experience and has pushed me to sign up for a 5K Mud Run in May. I will admit - we were pretty sore a few days after the race, so we should have "trained" a little better prior to the run. This was one of my fitness goals for HCC, so I am very excited to reach that at the end of this program! Not to mention - I feel better! Side note- Mrs. Martins and I made the "fitness" page of the Dallas Morning news for running that 4K... they featured us under "fitness for women in their 20's" - which makes me laugh, since I am almost out of my 20's! Still, we were pretty proud :)

  50. For my three day challenge, on my first day, I went and ran 3 miles to try and get back to my 5k level (didn't quite run all 3 miles). On my second day, I did a pilates class. I hardly do those, so it was definitely something different. On my third day, I ran a mile and lifted weights. I can tell my arms are getting better and that I can run a mile at 6mph without getting extremely winded. Your cardiovascular health is a huge factor in your health, especially when it comes to heart attacks. So, if you increase your cardio and workouts, that increases your cardiovascular health, but you also have to take into consideration the food you eat. Food is also another factor when it comes to heart attacks.

  51. Since wrestling season is over, lately I have been very inactive. I'm not used to doing no fitness exercises. I have noticed that clothes don't fit right anymore. So I decided that I need to change this! On the first day I ran from my house to the high school and back. This is about a two mile run. On the second day the weather was really nice so I went for a swim. I swam 10 laps with rests in between because I am not a strong swimmer. On the third day I went to jump street for 2 hours. There I jumped on the trampoline doing acrobatic stunts and what not. The longest backflip streak I had was 25! Exercise shouldn't be the only thing you do though because its 90% diet and 10% fitness.

  52. At the Begining of May, my family couldn't agree on where to go for our week-long summer trip. I suggested beach, and said that if they agreed, I would spend an hour of every day swimming laps at the rec center. Because I hate working out more than anything in the world, this was a big deal, and they unanimously agreed. So all month I have been swimming laps everyday after school. It actually hasn't been as bad as I thought. Swimming in the form of excersise I hate the least, mostly because I cant feel myself sweat when under water. In the begining it was taking me the full hour to swim 5 laps, but I got faster and now I am up to 11 laps in 90 minutes! I'm starting to like feeling fit and getting my heart-rate up. I think this spree will last all summer :)

  54. On Friday, I decided to try out for something called Guard Games at work which is basically a big competition between teams of lifeguards from different facilities; little did I know what I was getting myself into. The competition has four events and one of them was “Fitness”. Needless to say by the time tryouts were over, I had done more swimming exercise at the tryouts than I had done in a while. After that I decided to take it into my own hands and try and start running every day, so I’ve been running at least 2 miles a day and I hope to slowly increase the amount that I can run. Exercise is important for cardiovascular health because it can increase the strength of your heart, allowing more blood to be transferred throughout your blood vessels and it can decrease the chance of heart attack and strokes.
